Sully

The sky had become a sea of inky midnight blue broken only by the occasional blinking star.

The RV moved along at a steady pace though I kept it under the speed limit so we’d fly under the radar. We were maybe an hour or so away from the skyscrapers of Kansas City and the world had crashed back down to earth. None of the buildings we passed now were taller than a few stories.

I drove alone for now. Sam had sat beside me for the first half hour but had retreated to the bedroom to rest. Chase had gone with her.

Something had passed between the two of them when Sam had gotten back with the RV, though I wasn’t sure what. I only knew that the two of them needed to keep each other company for a while. Far be it for me to interrupt them.

Emma sat at the table, not saying a word though I would catch her staring at me every now and then. Sometimes, when I looked at her, my heart would jolt with happiness, until my head got into the picture. The happiness would turn to unease, only to spiral inevitably into guilt.

I couldn’t get my feelings straight about her. The whole thing was impossible.

Unable to handle my emotions, I mostly ignored her, which didn’t make me feel like much of a man. I kept my eyes on the road, hoping she would eventually get tired of boring her eyes into the back of my head, though it seemed she had infinite patience for it.

Gideon moved about in the kitchenette, cleaning the plates and tumblers using napkins that he soaked sparingly with bottled water. Retrieving a can of dog food, he opened it with his penknife. I knew it was long pastime for a meal of my own when the smell of dog food made my mouth water.

Only two days of being on the road and I was giving real consideration to dog food.

Unbelievable.

“Bandit, come get some chow,” Gideon called to him. Bandit jumped off the sofa beside Zeb, padding to him. I fought to contain my envy when he dived snout first into the food.

Fishing out our remaining provisions, Gideon counted out three candy bars and one last bag of nuts. Opening them all, Gideon divided the candy into six equal portions of around an inch and a half long, and a few nuts, handing one to Zeb who took it with a nod of thanks. Next, he made his way to Emma. She wasn’t quite as gracious, taking the meager offering with a disbelieving look.

“But when I asked earlier, you said we only had nuts left?”

“No, Zeb offered you nuts which you declined. No one said anything about candy bars.”

“But you knew what I meant,” she murmured. “I just… I’m so hungry my stomach hurts.” Her eyes grew large and luminous. She seemed even more of a child at that moment.

“Ours too,” Zeb’s responded. “Hang on in there. We’ll get some real food soon.”
